How can you nominate a Native American Role Model?

Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Building Bridges: Health Science Education in Native American Communities is a national program funded by the National Center for Research Resources, an institute of the National Institutes of Health.

 

This federal grant program is funded by a Science Education Partnership Award from National Institutes of Health. It is a partnership between the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board (GPTCHB), and K-12 schools in Native American communities.

The site's major focus is careers in health and science.  This has expanded to include Native Americans career paths in teaching, agriculture, counseling and architect.  This list continues to grow as Native American role models are submitted.

Project Objectives

The goals of the program are:

  1. To stimulate student interest in science 

  2. To develop higher science/technology competency in the workforce 

  3. To improve society’s science and health research literacy.  

 

The activities of the program are:

  1. Conduct summer workshops for teachers 

  2. Develop hands-on science curriculum

  3. Implement professional development and mentorship for teachers

  4. Establish science camps for middle school students

  5. Provide science enrichment opportunities for high school students

  6. Participate in local health fairs and community events
