Why I Chose This Career

“I knew there was a need for drug and alcohol counselors, but I thought it would be even more beneficial to have a Native Counselor working with our native people. Someone who comes from the same community and understands their background and even their humor and teasing. I’ve encountered many different non-native professionals and I’ve felt I’ve had to explain my background or beliefs to them so they could get a better understanding of where I come from, but my clients don’t have to do that with me.”

Special Career Skills

“You have to be able to take what is thrown at you. Clients are at many different stages of change and as a counselor, we have to be able to motivate them. Many times I’ve had to accept that they aren’t ready for positive change. I’ve come to realize I need to have patience, empathy, and understanding with the population that I work with.”

I Like My Career Because

  1. Every day is different and every client situation is unique.

  2. I learn a lot from my clients and their life stories and situations.

  3. I am blessed to be working home in my own community.

“Nothing good comes easy! You have to sacrifice and work hard! In the end it will all pay off!”

I said this to myself over and over when I moved to Lincoln, NE and left my Husband and Daughter to attend UNL. Now I’m saying it to my daughter who has a great opportunity at Duchesne Academy Preparatory school in Omaha, Ne. It really helped me when I was getting discouraged and struggling and now I say it to my daughter when she gets homesick and overwhelmed. It helps us get back on track to our goal.
